Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

lamelib can't be unstuffed
I have a macbook and am running audacity 1.2.6 (from other posts it sounds like i need to get 1.2.5, but that's not what was offered for mac OSX when i downloaded). Audacity itself works fine, though it crashes more often than i'd like. I am trying to download and use lamelib. i have downloaded both the "carbon" and other OSX version and get them to the desktop ok, but when i click on them i get a message that says they cannot be unstuffed and that i need to use the "original installer". What????? Help. And, why does this have to b so user unfriendly?

Actually, you're running an Intel Mac which is the important part. If you know that, then you know to download Audacity 1.2.5 which is in the middle of this page (on my monitor)...
http://audacityteam.org/download/mac
Then, just so we're all on the same page of the hymnal, tell Mac OS-X to turn on file extensions, so you can see what's actually there.
Desktop > Finder > Preferences > Advanced > Show All File Extensions. You can turn this off later, but this shows you the stuff the Mac normally hides as "unimportant." When you're lost, it's important.
Then, from this page...
http://lame.buanzo.com.ar/
You download the only lame listed for 1.2.5 and install it with the instructions.
You can delete everything you did before this--unless you're in the middle of a project. Then you have an interesting problem.
I personally create an Audacity folder on my desktop and drag it into the /Applications folder. Then drag all the decompressed Audacity files and folders over to it. Then drag the lame library file over to the /PlugIns folder inside your install. Officially, that's /Applications/Audacity/PlugIns/lame...something. You get the idea.

Re: lamelib can't be unstuffed
I have been having a similiar problem-I have downloaded all sorts of lamelib files-the file suggested gives me a word doc labeled lamelib that looks like a lego from within Audacity-but STLL no go-when I attempt to convert to mp-3 says it can't be done-grr-why does this have to be so hard? is there any other way?

You're right. It's a travesty. Get your money back.
<<<is there any other way?>>>
Certainly. There are any number of for-profit audio programs out there that will be happy to edit and convert your show to MP3 or anything else you want. I think iTunes can be set to import as several different qualities of MP3 as well as their proprietary AAC format, and maybe others. Correct me, but I think QuickTime Pro might do that, too.

Maybe similar symptoms, but I sincerely doubt a similar problem. Do you have exactly the same machine mentioned at the top of this post?
