Album Artwork Disabled?

Newbie here. I managed to create the music files from tapes and import them into iTunes (feeling very pleased!). Now I notice that album artwork is disabled. Did I miss something?

I found a partial answer. WAV files have this problem. I exported from Audacity in WAV format. Even though the encoder was set to import Apple lossless, the files stayed in WAV format. I converted all of them in iTunes, and the new files accept artwork. Those downloaded automatically even attach to the WAV files as well, although manually added ones do not.

Now my question is which files to save. The lossless files are smaller. They seem slightly subdued. Is there a quality difference?

Suggestions?

There should be no difference in sound between Apple lossless and a WAV file. That's what "lossless" means. However, your media player may not play them exactly the same, for example it may play one format a bit louder than the other. If you convert from WAV to Apple Lossless and back again to WAV, the original WAV and the final WAV should be identical.

The WAV format does not support artwork or metatag data.
