While trying to save work, I hit <save as> instead of <save> and received for my efforts: "Audacity error/ Failed to get file system statistics (error 2: no such file or directory)" - which I can't get rid of, and it is multiplying itself. Scary.

Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Re: Error message
Can you shut down the machine? Press and hold the power button?
If you selected "Save Project As..." and didn't put anything in the box, the system is supposed to prompt you for a location or filename. It will fail to do that if you put punctuation marks in either the foldername or filename. Did you? A good way to drive the system nuts is to put either slash mark in a name.
If you do manage to stop the system, chances are your show will be damaged.
I know OS-9 used to let you do that. OS-X doesn't.
