Sound Output device problem

Error while opening sound device. Please check the output device settings and the project sample rate.
I have been through the preferences several times and everything looks good. My presonus firebox is properly assigned, it's a 16bit 44100 hz wav file.
Using a G4 sawtooth, 1ghz, 10.3.9 OS.
So where is the problem? Is there a compatibility issue with presonus?

If it uses only ASIO drivers there will be a problem as Audacity does not support ASIO. I'm not sure if any other drivers are available for Macs.
Also you may need to change the "quality" format. I think the Presonus is 24 bit, not sure what the native sample rate is, so you may need to experiment.
If all else fails you may need to use Cubase LE (included with the firebox?) to record, then export as an uncompressed audio file (wav) for editing in Audacity.

I thought asio drivers died on mac with macos9.
i didnt download any drivers for it, MACOS X recognizes it at first glances and uses it as a default soundcard for everything, music, systeme sounds, and recording.
If audacity works with M-audio and roland interfaces, I dont understand why there would be a compatibility issue with presonus.

How do you know it works for recording?
Do you have QuickTime Pro?
<<<works with M-audio and roland interfaces,>>>
Sometimes not. There's a fair about of complaints about those two.
