Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

How to Turn Off Effects?

Post by ItchyEgo » Mon Jan 28, 2008 8:07 pm

Hey Thanks for reading this...
I Imported a song when I just started using Audacity on my Mac G4, and tried out an Effect but going to the Effect DropDown menu and clicking on some reverb effect (can' remember what exactly).
But now I can't seem to turn it off and even when I restart and import a fresh clip or mp3, the reverb effect is still on.

How do I turn it (an effect) off?

There is no Check Mark next to the chosen effect or any indication of what effect is active (on), so i am totally lost as to how to turn off the effect?

Please help -

The desperation method (on a Mac) is to trash the Audacity Preferences file and restart Audacity.

/Users/koz/Library/Preferences/audacity Preferences

Drag that file to the trash. When you restart Audacity, it will be at First Birthday and the system will make a new file. Remember Audacity wakes up in Mono...

As to why the effect got stuck.....I'm a lot less sure about that one. See if that happens again.

Thank you Koz...
How do I know what effect is on? How should I turn it off if it is on -normally?

What indication does it give to let me know either of these ?

I admit you had me there. I normally deal with I/O. (I/o, i/o, it's off to work we go...)

View > History

...will give you a list of what you did.

Edit > UNDO

...will back you out of the changes you made to the work.

Being a simple editor, I don't believe you can remove the effects out of order.

Koz,

Thanks again - I discovered the History solution, too. But this IS one for the Techs / Programers to correct - as it so doesseem to be an oversight not to beable to tell what effects are on /off and how to know the difference (Other than the akward History solution you brought up.

Cheers, I don't know the Audacity much yet, but between working with and this board. I should get it going.

I do have another question: which I'll post, separtedly :
I am using Audacity to record guitar, but it seems only to record on the right channel, with a VERY low audible signal on the left. After checking all the con nections, the Mac Tiger System Prefs Sound levels, and main controls in Audacity, I couldn't come up with a reason. I'm using a Stereo plug (Mac) to Stereo 1/4 " plug into my Martin, but nothing occurs to me for the reason or any solution. Any Idea?

We 1.2.x people are using two version old Audacity software. Are you still using OS 8?

<<<the right channel, with a VERY low audible signal on the left. After checking all the con nections>>>

I'm not shocked. The guitar is producing signals suitable for a mono 1/4" plug connection. Hot pickup and ground. The Mac is expecting two different signals and ground--three connections. Unless you put an adapter in the middle somewhere, you have one wire that isn't connected to anything.

I think this should do it:

KOZ, Again! You Rock! Thanks!

I'll see what I can do (I have a little pre-amp plug in the guitar, Tried it Mono-to-Mono, just to see - didn't work of coarse! - but yea, your solution makes sense.

I'm up tp date System wise - Tiger 4.11, but I have an old G4 Tower, Sawtooth,
that I got 10 years ago. Squirrels are powering it, these days, I think.

Thanks for all your trouble looking 'round for the piece I need.

Have you had the same problem or knew in advance what you'd run into?
You a guitar player?

I'll let you know how it works out with your solution:

Thanks Again,

OUCH!! Reality hits:

KOZ, I just got it... I have been expecting a Stereo signal from my guitar (DOH!) and so have been using a stereo plug. You're thinking it's just a mono?!?! I think you're right. But I tried a Mono to Mono, and it didn't work at all (no sound, period)) which made me think that it Was a Stereo pickup inside my Martin acoustic guitar. (sorry, not all of brain is working - just woke up).

I' ll get back to you on this...

There are Mac people still using System 8 or System 9? All must be powered through their wind mills???!!! :)

The idea is to point out how old this version of Audacity is. Remember all the odd things and problems OS-8 had? Audacity 1.4.x is just about ready for release.

I believe you need to put a mono plug (tip and sleeve, no ring) into the guitar. It's a mono source, unless you have a very strange guitar. The Mac needs an 1/8" stereo plug like the top illustration here:

http://www.kozco.com/tech/audioconnecto ... ctors.html

This was a little harder to run down than I thought. Adapter cables in the direction we need aren't available. But.

If you plug one of these into your guitar:

You can then plug one of these between the adapter and the Mac:

I can get entertainment out of several instruments, but "music" may be pushing it. I've been pushing sound from one place to another for a long time, so I've run into most of the problems.
