input device problems on mac

input device problems on mac

in preferences I can only have Built-in Audio. My default input source remains just that - nothing else is on the drop down list. I have reinstalled, and removed the prefs before I did so from Users/library etc

what have I done wrong? It used to work fine. I have some files I need to edit, but can't do anything with them.
