Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

noise interference on 45rpm

Post by mnkytrk » Fri Jan 25, 2008 1:22 pm

hi, i'm using audacity with a usb turntable which works fine on 33rpm but goes funny on 45. after a few seconds of recording it distorts with loads of noise.

should add i'm using a flat screen imac, but not sure which OS (about 18 months old?)

i quit everything and restart before starting recording. last night i recorded an lp, then a 45 ep then another lp. the 2 lp's are fine but the 45 ep got the distortion.

any ideas gratefully recieved

n.b. have since found the other threads with similar problems. Koz, i appreciate your suggestion for the analogue route but unfortunately don't have a preamp. its just annoying that the turntable is sold a mac compatible but only works 70% of the time. maybe the update will solve this.

It's possible there is an elctrical fault on your TT when you have 45rpm engaged.

Workaround: record your singles at 33.3 RPM - and then use Audaciti'ys Change Speed Effect to speed the recording up to 45. It'll obviously take a bit longer - but should work.

Re the analogue route - is your TT an ION or Numark? If so then you should have the trwo analogue RCA leads already plumbed in - and (underneath IIRC) you should find a switch to toggle between phon and lin-in oupits. Without a pre-amp, set this to "Line In" - connect the RCA plugs via the cable that Koz recommends to the Line In of your computer .....

If you start having unexplained high distortion and noise, the USB service may be causing trouble. Far better to transfer your work the analog method which is a snap on a Mac.

cheers chaps

have since found out that it happens on 33 sometimes as well. am going to try the analogue route tonite

btw, its an 'acoustic solutions' TT but does have a lieout/phono switch. its currently set on line out so will try leaving as is.

i assume i still use the audacity software to record ?

also, would it be worth trying on a mac with an older OS?

thanks again

Yes you should leave it in Line Out mode if you are going to connect directly to your computer's sound card. If you set it to phono you would need a preamp between the deck and the computer.

And yes continue to use Audacity.

Sorry, can't comment on Macs - as I'm a PC user.

Let us know how you get on,
