Sorry to bring such a simple question, but when I've imported a file and start to edit out noise, etc, the selection process seems no longer to work after maybe the first or second zoom and cut. The I-beam is selected, and it highlights a section of interest, but all of the menu options are grayed out. Obviously, I'm a new user.
What did I not do?

It's not simple. I'm trying to cast what there is left of my mind back to earlier problems like this. Are you in 1.2.4? I think that's the one with memory problems. Are your hard drive starting to fill up?
You can upgrade to 1.2.6 and you can load 1.3.x, too. You can install them both, but only use one at a time. See if you have the same problems with different versions. If you're running out of hard drive space, then you need to move stuff or throw stuff out. The requirement for a production machine is 90% full hard drive, or less.
