I have an absolute ENORMOUS noise problem that I cannot explain.
I receorded a whole album through a USB turntable into Audacity with the intentions of cutting it into tracks for burning to CD through iTunes.

However I didnt get that far. I played a little of the album which apart from the usual clicks and pops played perfectly... and about 45 seconds into the track this strange rumbling / humming overwelmed the music. I cannot explain it. And selecting parts from the rest of the same album the noise is all the way through it. Strange thing is that it is one album of a two album set. The second album is perfect.

I have cut and pasted a short TEST.wav file if anyone want to receive it. Can I post it here? Maybe someone knows what going on. I cant explain it. I am going to have to check every single one of 200+ albums that I have recently digitised. Hard to believe this has affected just one !!!

I am no longer surprised by strange things from USB turntables. I hope it's just a one off - if not, you may have to record from the analogue output of the turntable (via a phono pre-amp) into the "Line In" of your Mac.

You join a very exclusive club. There can't be more than a couple of thousand other people all having the same problem.

The universal Get Out Of Jail card is to transfer your vinyl using the analog cables.

Hmmm yeah well I have a feeling its not a one-off. I just picked this album, at random out of the middle of a 200 + list of digital recordings. The odds on it being a one off are pretty remote. I am away from home this week so cant start checking back until I get home next week

There is a data coordination problem between the USB device, the computer, and Audacity. Apparently. What this causes is an unstable system. It doesn't break right away, that would be too easy.

If you read all the postings (search USB + Turntable) you come out with only one impression. There are no symptoms. Everybody's turntable is different, but there are common threads. Everybody is using the USB turntable they got for Christmas and nobody is getting their vinyl onto CD. "Midway through the second album, the audio turned to garbage..."

That's why when you showed up, everybody groaned.

On the PC side, some people have gotten around this by flogging their machine, defragging their hard drive, cleaning out the Registry, deleting drivers, and generally doing all the things that Mac people never have to do. Over on the Mac side, we can offer the analog method which has a very near 100% success rate.
