Importing AIFF to iTunes?

I have just successfully created my first vinyl-to-computer transfer, exported it as an AIFF file, but am unable to import it to iTunes. As per a prior query on this subject, I opened the file with QuickTime (not pro), and it played just fine. Checking the Get Info for the file, it identifies it as AIFF, and I have clicked Open with iTunes. I have created a playlist in iTunes into which to import, but nothing happens when I use the import function. ?????

I'm working with an old G4 tower, OS X 10.4.11, iTunes 7.5 (19), and Audacity 1.2.6.

This is all very new to me. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

I never said I used an AIFF file because I don't. I do most of my capture and production work in 48000/16 bit (video standard) instead of 44100 and export as a Windows WAV file. Open up iTunes and File > Import. It slides right in.

Still, what you did should have worked. You did use iTunes Import, right?

Yes, I have tried both drag & drop and import into iTunes. Neither one works. Any thoughts on why?

So, WAV files will work on Macs? I was under the impression that WAV was for Windows and AIFF for Mac. Also, that iTunes wanted the 44100 format rather than anything else. Clearly you are having success with WAV and 48000, so I'll give it a try when I get home from work tonight.

Thanks for your input!

<<<So, WAV files will work on Macs? >>>

Macs will accept anything, so WAV was a good default for a fresh Audacity. Windows will not accept AIFF however.

The two audio formats are really close cousins to each other and you can go back and forth with no trouble or damage.

iTunes will accept almost anything as well, so you either have a damaged iTunes, or you somehow created damaged audio track(s).

After you get done creating your show file, close Audacity and open the show in QuickTime. Press Apple-I to get the INFO. What does it say?

Another variation. Download the Piano Trill from here:

...and see if that plays OK and will import into iTunes.

Thanks, Koz, for the info on WAV and AIFF files.

<<somehow created damaged audio track(s).>>

I am able to import the WAV files into iTunes & play them (although the AIFF is still a mystery), but I am unable to burn it to disc. I get an "unknown error" message. I'm working with my stepson's iMac and haven't used this disc burner before. I was unable to burn a commercial CD either, so I transferred a short sample file over to a PC laptop to try & burn it through Windows Media Player, but get a message saying I don't have music permissions. ???

<<After you get done creating your show file, close Audacity and open the show in QuickTime. Press Apple-I to get the INFO. What does it say?>>

My sample file (about 2 minutes worth) says:

Format: 16-bit interger (Little Endian), stereo, 44.100 kHz
Data Size: 19.00 MB
Data Rate: 1410.56 kbits/s

I love a good mystery, but would love to get this one figured out! Any additional help is much appreciated.

iTunes will not burn music to a disk.

What.

iTunes burns Playlists to a disk. You need to create a Playlist with your song in it and iTune should burn that will no trouble.

File > New Playlist. When you see it created on the left, drag your music over to it. While it's selected:

File > Burn Playlist To Disk.

It will prompt you in the large music windows to put a fresh disk in the machine.

And what's more you can use iTunes to print yourself some nice CD liners with the tracklistings of the playlist - and even some artwork.

Yes, this is what I am doing -- burning a playlist. Here is the series of messages I am getting:

Checking media ...
Checking playlist ...
Burning disc ..... initializing
Writing [name of track]

Then it kicks out the blank CD & gives me a message box that says:

"The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry."

My stepson stopped by this evening, and thought maybe I should just reformat the whole hard drive & re-install everything. Any other suggestions before I resort to this?

Many thanks,

Aleilah

Yes. DO NOT destroy anything until I can get back.
