Slightly slowing down music?

Post by TimArends » Tue Jan 26, 2010 7:42 pm

I have a turntable that I am using to digitize my LPs, and I discovered that it rotates slightly too fast. This is not too bad. In fact, I did not notice it until I listened to one of my recorded songs and then listened to the same song from another source. Normally, I do not mind my music being played at a slightly more lively pace. However, on some music, such as classical, it might be a problem. I believe there is a way to correct for this problem in Audacity, for example, by choosing Resample from the Tracks menu. However, this presents you with a dialog box in which you are expected to fill in some number, which I have no idea how to calculate. Is there an easier, more interactive way to do this?

Option 1: Get your turntable repaired. (best option)

Option 2: Select a small sample of a recorded track and use the "Change Speed" effect set at "- 10" (that's "minus 10") and click OK.
Have a listen to it -
Too fast? > Press Ctrl+Z (undo) and try -12
Too slow? > Press Ctrl+Z (undo) and try -8

Negative numbers make it slower. The more negative, the slower it will be. The closer to zero, the less the change will be.
When you have it correct, press Ctrl+Z to undo the last test, then double click on the track to select all of it and apply the effect to the whole track.

You could of course just use the "Preview" button, but sometimes it's easier to tell if you listen to a slightly longer section.
