Not normally. Only if you hit one of the snags.

You need to be careful not to extrapolate massive failure from the few people that post here. There are thousands of Audacity installs around the world and most of them work just fine. 1.2.x isn't called the stable release for nothing. Also, if you're careful about reading the complaints, they're not Audacity related. "My computer is a pile of rubble and I'm trying to perform a historically impossible task, why won't Audacity do this?" "My guitar High E string is out of tune. Can Audacity fix this?"

Take cheap, unstable USB turntables out of the mix and the forum would shrink by a quarter. Now remove people learning to edit and haven't read any of the instructions--another quarter or more, etc.

I have dominion over nine different installs of Audacity on all three computer platforms and I've never any trouble that wasn't traceable to something stupid I did or outright hardware failure--and very little of both. When I post suggestions, more often than not, I'm standing in front of the computer that's running the program...successfully. At work, I'm literally within reach of two PCs two large Macs, and one Linux machine.

This isn't the only forum I post on, either, and I use liberal cross-forum pollination.

It makes for some interesting flowers.

I think what Koz is saying on this thread is - that good equipment, well set-up and maintained, will normally produce the best recording results.
