Recording from a portable mini-disc player

Posted: Sun Nov 29, 2009 5:34 pm
This is my first attempt. I do not know which version of Audacity I downloaded ("stable" or "unstable"). I have a six-month-old iMac.

I connected the headphone jack of the mini-disc portable to the computer with a double-end 1/8" mini-phone plug connector. I believe I have inserted it into the correct jack of the computer (though I do not understand the jack's icon. I plugged the connector into the jack adjacent to the one with the headphone icon-- and it is the only other 1/8" jack in the computer.)

I set my preferences, both in the system and in Audacity, to built-in line in. The system input bar shows live input when the mini-disc plays, but the sound does not show up in the audacity file. Any ideas what I am doing wrong or not doing that I should be doing?

We really need to know which version of Audacity you have. Go to Audacity > About Audacity and tell us what it says there.

With a six-month-old iMac I'd strongly recommend version 1.3.9 if you don't already have it installed.

Yeah. Newer Macs don't get along so well with Audacity 1.2.

If this happens again with your new Audacity, you could have the wrong thing selected in Audacity Preferences. Audacity > Preferences > Import/Export.

O.K. The "about" selection under Audacity is gray and will not open. I cannot seem to darken it so it can open. What am I missing? (BTW, the version of Audacity I have was from a download, not a CD, for what that's worth.

I could just uninstall what I have now, and start over with 1.3.9, but I don't know how to uninstall what I've got.

OK, that means you have 1.2.x. Get rid of it. (The "About Audacity" that works on 1.2.6 is under the "Help" menu!)

To uninstall, just drag the Audacity icon to the trash.

To get 1.3.9:
  • Download 1.3.9 from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_mac
The .dmg should automatically open and show up as a virtual disc image.
Create a folder in your Applications folder called (for example) Audacity 1.3.9
Drag everything from the mounted disc image into that folder.
    Eject the disc image
    Double-click Audacity
    Have fun.

If you have an audacity icon in your dock at the bottom of the desktop, you may need one or two steps. Yes, go ahead and trash that icon, then Go > Applications from the desktop and trash that Audacity icon as well. That's the actual program.
