Cannot Select a Portion of a clip

Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Cannot Select a Portion of a clip
I'm new to Audacity, but I have used various sound editing softwares such as Peak or SoundHack, etc.
I just installed Audacity and I cannot seem to do the basics:
I cannot select a portion of soundfile by clicking and dragging on the waveform.
The Multi-Tool Mode is selected, and clicking onto the Selection Tool does not switch from Multi_Mode tool. As a result, every time I click on the waveform, it automatically zooms in and I cannot select anything.
This is really frustrating. Could you please help?
Thanks,
Roy

Re: Cannot Select a Portion of a clip
I can't reproduce this with Audacity 1.2.6 and OSX 10.5.8 on a PPC machine.
Could you please verify which version of Audacity you are using, and tell us which Mac and OS you are using?

Re: Cannot Select a Portion of a clip
Sometimes we can cure schizophrenia like this by trashing the preferences and make Audacity start over. Do as many of these that apply...
Trash Mac Audacity Preferences

Restart Audacity and it should ask you "English?" when it wakes up. If it doesn't, you missed one.

Re: Cannot Select a Portion of a clip
Hi,
Thanks for your advice. I trashed the preferences both in Preferences folder and Application support, and I was able to restart Audacity. Now I could select the portion of the file, but I cannot seem to switch tools from Selection tool to others. Every time I click on Timeshift or Multi, the selection stays on the Selection tool.
Thanks again for your help!
