Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

I had the same problem and tried all of the above to no avail.

However, I think I have solved the frustration that both Audacity and LameLib seem to be creating.... I dumped the both of them and forgot that either have ever existed.

<<<When I tell Audacity 1.3.3 to export as a MP3, it asks me to show it the lib, so I make it /Applications/libmp3lame.dylib and it just tells me "Could not open MP3 encoding library!">>>

In other words, you're using unstable software and complaining that it's unstable, and you're posting in the wrong forum. I would repost in the 1.3.x forum. They'd be much more likely to help you over there.

All of the above? You reinstalled fresh to a /Audacity folder under /Applications and put the lame software in the Plug-Ins folder?

You can always encode to MP3 or AAC using iTunes, so it isn't like you're forced to use the one in Audacity.

I gotta find another Intel machine to try this on. I just did another install using a PPC and Audacity 1.2.6. Audacity and the lame software installed perfectly and work. Total time ten minutes.

I did have trouble on the Intel machine because of the Zip file format. That one did not go smoothly.

Here's mine:

Model Name: Mac
Model Identifier: MacBook2,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MB21.00A5.B00
+==================================
Audacity 1.2.6
/Applications
6899056 bytes
Owner can Read and Write
Everybody else RO
============================
/Users/Shared/libmp3lame.dylib
723,796 bytes
Owner RW
go +r
ownership is <my account>:wheel

I also tried moving Audacity to an Audacity folder and libmp3lame.dylib to /Applications/Audacity/Plug-ins. Ownership changed to group admin, with otherwise the same permissions. Still can't open it.

Excellent. Now get granular on how you got the libmp3lame.dylib file.

If you Apple-F on your system and find boma, does it admit bomarchivehelper exists at all?

Do you remember if you unzipped the downloaded lame file using Stuffit?

Thanks Koz: after starting to gather the info your requested, I figured out my problem.

I'd downloaded Audacity 1.2.6 for a Power PC when I should have downloaded Audacity 1.2.5 for an Intel.

I'd bet everyone else with this problem did the same thing because my symptoms matched theirs perfectly.

I uncompressed with boma, but to make doubly sure, I re-downloaded the .zip, uncompressed with boma, replaced the copy in /Applications/Audacity/Plug-ins with the resulting file, and tried again. Same error code.

You have the wrong Audacity. Intel machines should be on 1.2.5.

Uh....Audacity works fine. It's only the export of mp3's that doesn't work correctly. If I had ppc code, it wouldn't run...

OK...you nailed it. I refetched 1.25 and everything works, but how in blazes was I running Motorola code on an Intel processor? I'm a Mac newby (Linux is my preferred OS), but that makes no sense....what have I missed?
