Re: LameLib
Are you totally sure you're on an Intel Mac and you have the right Audacity and Lame libraries? This is precisely what happens when you get one of those items wrong. What does it say when you click Apple, About This Mac? Power PC G5, or Power PC G4?
Are you the administrator on your machine? Apple, System Preferences, System, Accounts. Does it say Admin under your name?
If you click Audacity, Help, About Audacity, what does it say?

Re: LameLib
Hi. I read through all of this thread. I have used Audacity and Lame successfully on PPC Macs and on PCs (when I have to). In fact, I am such a fan of Audacity that I have given numerous presentations and workshops on using this great program, and created a podcast on using it for language teaching and learning. http://audacityteam.org/forum/posting.p ... f=13&t=147# However, I haven't gotten it to work on my Intel-powered Mac yet.http://audacityteam.org/forum/posting.p ... 8dbc&t=147#
I am currently using a MacPro 2 x 3 GHz dual-core Intel Xeon, Mac OS X version 10.4.10 and Audacity version 1.2.5 for Mac OS X (Intel). I am the administrator of this computer.
I have downloaded the libmp3lame-osx-universal-3.97 zip several times. I've unzipped it on the desktop, in the Audacity folder...it's the same. Inside the folder are the following items:
1. build (a Unix executable file)
2. Lame Library v3.97 Installer.pmproj (when clicked the error message reads The file "Lame Library v3.87 Installer.pmproj" does not appear to b compressed or encoded. It is advised that you obtain further information about the contents of this file from the sender or provider of the file. It will help to know what program created the file and what operating system(s) the file can be used on.
3. nested folders: package/usr/local/lib/libmp3lame.dylib
4. readme.txt, part of which states Also, it is meant to be run from a PPC based Mac. Slight modifications will need
to be make to allow it to run on an Intel based Mac.
I followed Koz's instruction to drag libmp3lame.dylib to /Applications/Audacity/Plug-Ins. I went back to my Audacity project and tried to Export selection as MP3. I got the familiar directive to locate the LAMELib. No matter whether I point to the libmp3lame.dylib inside /Applications/Audacity/Plug-Ins, on the desktop, or in another folder, I get the same error message: color=#0000FF]Unable to open target for writing.[/color]
My Mac does not have BOMArchiveHelper.app installed, but I don't think I need it since the zip file unzipped with Stuffit Expander, right? So why doesn't Audacity recognize the libmp3lame.dylib?
Marsha

Re: LameLib
Yeah. Me too. Same experience as Marsha. I've been using Audacity and Lame on PB G4 for 2 years with no problems. My favorite audio editor .. and I think I've tried most of them. Recived my new MacBook Pro2.4 yesterday and cannot get Lame to install. Tried the tricks in pevious posts. I also do not have BOMArchiveHelper.app on my new computer. I genrally operate as a limited user, but switched to admin for the user account ... no luck. I then tried on my admin account, as well. No luck. Just wanted to add that I am aslo having problems. Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. I miss Audacity already and I sold my PB so I can't go back. Suggestions?

<<<I also do not have BOMArchiveHelper.app on my new computer>>>
Bill Of Materials Archive Helper should be included in every operating system from 10.3.0 on. If it's not, then we're in trouble because Stuffit Expander will not open up all ZIP type files--this one in particular. It tries, but it produces a damaged decompression.
Which is no surprise to you.
Google your brains out. Last time this happened to us, one of the Systems people found a third-party ZIP decompressor on the internet. I'm not at work, so I can't tell you what he found.

Re: LameLib
OK, I'm having problems getting Audacity 1.3.3 to recognize the LAME library.
I'm using the universal version of 3.97 of the libmp3lame.dylib file on a 1.33 GHz PPC iBook using OS X 10.4.10.
I've used BOMA to extract, and put the libmp3lame.dylib file in my applications folder (since we can put it anywhere). When I tell Audacity 1.3.3 to export as a MP3, it asks me to show it the lib, so I make it /Applications/libmp3lame.dylib and it just tells me "Could not open MP3 encoding library!"
Is there something I am doing wrong and I don't realize it? I can always export as an AIFF and use iTunes to convert, but that's just an extra step I don't want to have to go through.

Re: LameLib
Will somebody please start a new thread? Piling on to an existing question makes the thread impossible to follow.

Same here. I'm an Administrator. I'm on an Intel MacBook. I used BOMA to open the .zip. The error message is:

Could not open MP3 encoding library!
OS X Version 10.4.10
Processor 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

I am having the exact same problem.
OK, I'm having problems getting Audacity 1.2.6 to recognize the LAME library.

Re: LameLib
OK, let's get compulsive, my favorite activity past gardening.
Get the INFO on your lame file and open up that extension on the bottom that nobody ever goes to. Collect the machine information and folder names--accurately.
Here's mine:
====================================
--Jimmy--
Mac Mini
1.83 GHz Intel DuoCore
OS-X 10.4.10
QuickTime 7.3.0 Pro
Audacity 1.2.5
/Applications/Audacity/Plug-Ins/libmp3lame.dylib
723,796 bytes
Owner can Read and Write
Everybody Else can Read Only
====================================
--Francis--
PowerBook 12"
1.5 GHz PowerPC G4
OS-X 10.4.10
QuickTime 7.2.0 Pro
Audacity 1.2.4
/Applications/Audacity/LameLib
243,429 bytes
Owner can Read and Write
Everybody Else can Read Only
====================================
All the installs have an Audacity folder in /Applications that
contains Audacity.app and all of its associated folders
and programs (Languages, LICENSE.txt, etc.). No folder splits.
All of my MP3 exports work on these and other machines.
No exceptions.
