R and L tracks

Post by Patth9 » Thu Oct 08, 2009 9:15 pm

For a whole day I captured from my old cassettes into audacity and there were two tacks receiving the capture, Right and Left, I presume. The next day when I captured I had two tracks, but only one track was capturing the sound. I saw waves on one tack, but the other tack had only a very thin line (no waves).

I'm sure I have screwed up something in my preferences, I even trashed the preferences, but still, I can not get both the tracks to capture. No idea what I have done or not done. Please give me a nudge in the right direction.

OK [rolling up sleeves].

Audacity 1.2 natural state is one channel (mono), not two channel (stereo). When you trashed your preferences, Audacity returned to First Birthday as was proper -- but not appropriate to your job.

It did ask you "English?" right? That's the test of correctly trashing the preferences.

You can easily reset Audacity preferences to stereo, but I can't tell you where because my machine will not run Audacity 1.2. Restart Audacity after you make preference changes to make sure the changes "stick."

Most people will also want a change from 32-bit floating to 16-bit also in preferences. 44100, 16-bit, Stereo is the worldwide standard for Music CD.

Thank you so much for trying to help me. Seems I am my own worse enemy. Apparently, at some point I must have changed the mic plug-in from stereo to mono. I didn't realize this until I was reconfiguring my plug-in situation (RCA and 1/8) to allow for a second set of speakers via the headphone plug so I could hear what was being played beyond only hearing what was being played when actual recording was taking place. Sometimes, I am just ditzy. I am recording from a cassette deck.

<<<Sometimes, I am just ditzy.>>>

Ditzy we can handle. I'm in Los Angeles. Ditzy is a career move with its own Hollywood Union Local. The people who arrive naturally assuming the product is terrible and should be fixed immediately are harder. Them we just tell to get their money back.
