recording phone messages

I am using a Mac 10.4.11 on PowerBook G4. I have saved some messages from grandbabies for a couple of years and want to save them to disk. I have the audio cord and adapter for the phone. I don't have some little pref right. I can't get the sound out of the phone into Audacity. It will record me speaking when I have the cord in the headset jack even with out anything else attached to it. I have done this a number of years ago but can't remember what I am doing wrong. I have Audacity 1.2.6
Any advise will be so gratefully appreciated.
Marie

You are almost certainly recording the PowerBook built-in microphone instead of the message recorder connection.
The PB Line-In connection looks like a circle with two black arrows.
Apple > System Preferences > Hardware > Sound > Input. Switch to Line-In. There is a little sound meter there and it can tell you if the connection is OK. It helps you set the levels, too. Peaks in the top third are OK.
Audacity may need to you switch preferences to point to the same input. Some PBs just tell you "Default Input." and that's all.
