Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

no sound with OS X 10.5.8 and Audacity 1.x.x

Post by Brudeledon » Sun Sep 06, 2009 11:30 pm

I upgrade my os to OS X10.5.8 Leopard. I have a G5 dual processor system. I was running audacity 1.2.6 and OS X 10.4 with no problems. I have also download Audacity 1.3.8. I get no sound what so ever either recorded or played through. I tried my cassette though the imic, my microphone through the imic and desktop - still nothing. Appreciate any ideas on what to try next. Thank you.

First, Leopard wasn't intended to run on a PowerPC machine. Tiger was the last OS to do that with good stability. I don't think Snow Leopard will run on a G machine at all. So you've just done your last upgrade and even at that, it may not have worked right. Do you still have your Tiger disks?

<<<I get no sound what so ever>>>

I want to split the machine in half. How are you listening? Can you play YouTube sound, DVD sound and Music CDs?

Yes I have my install disks. I upgraded because of an application, I think it was taxcut, said I needed to have leopard for it to run. Should I reinstall the older version of my OS? Any bewares I should know.

Thank you for your input.

I also recently upgraded my dual G5 to 10.5.8 from 10.4.11. I'm running Audacity 1.3.9 with no problems. But I was already running 1.3.8 before I upgraded.

I infer from your post that plugging directly into the line in port on the back of the G5 does not work? Could the problem be with the iMic? Does the problem go away if you disconnect the iMic?

Are you running any other audio software that could mess with the sound hardware? Does iTunes work?

Are you running any "haxies", particularly APE (Application Enhancer)? If so, you need to upgrade APE. If you can do without it for a few hours it has a very helpful uninstall process that you can access from the APE System Preferences pane.

Have you used Audio Midi Setup to check all the input and output settings? Have you checked System Preferences > Sound to see if things look normal? Have you checked Audacity's Preferences > Devices to see if things make sense there?

If all else fails you could go to ~/Library/Application Support/audacity and move the "audacity.cfg" file to the desktop (this is equivalent to trashing preferences AFAIK). When you launch Audacity it will revert to all it's default preferences.

That's all I can think of for now.

You need to answer the question. Does a Music CD, DVD or YouTube play OK?

Apple > System Preferences > Hardware > Sound > Input and Output. This is the simple version of the MIDI panel. Are you pointed to the right devices? If you plug USB equipment in the System can miss its cues and route sound to the wrong places.

Also, this panel has a sound meter which is handy for diagnostics. If the Input is correct, you should get bouncing blue lights if you play something. Do you?
