Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Koz

I maybe should have mentioned this to you earlier, but it never dawned on me that itunes may be the problem. When I went to your sound test site it opened in quicktime, and because I wasn't sure how to download my tracks I thought I would just try to play the mp3 export using quicktime and I have seperate left and right tracks!! So it seems that the issue is playing the mp3 after importing it into itunes, not with audacity (or maybe an incompatibility between itunes and audacity??) In any case, I now have what I need, as long as I play it with quicktime rather than itunes.

Thanks for all your help. I hope I haven't been too much of a pain, as I'm sure there will be something else that I'll need assistance with in the future.

<<<as long as I play it with quicktime rather than itunes.>>>

You know iTunes has a whole panel devoted to importing specifications? That's where you set WAV, MP3, or AAC compression, etc.

That's where that test sound file comes in handy. It's made by software other than yours and it's guaranteed to be in stereo, no overload, correct left to right, etc. etc. etc. If you really want an experience, listen to the last of that clip on headphones.

Yes I know about the importing options on itunes, and I tried different settings there without any luck. Either way, I have what I need for now. Once again, thanks a lot, and you're right that clip with headphones is a rush!

gas,

I may be missing something .... but I don't understand why you are "importing" MP3 files into iTunes.

The mechanism in iTunes that you should use, and definitely works for me both with MP3s and WAVs produced with Audacity from vinyl, is the "Add File to Library" or "Add Folder to Library".

I personally am not. I approach iTunes with a perfect uncompressed WAV file and use the import conversion to produce a very high quality, tiny AAC file. Does "Adding Folder" do that conversion?

Ah, I see .......

No, Koz, it does not do that conversion - it just drags in the WAV or the MP3. Cute way to get AAC's into iTunes - I didn't realise you could do that.

Where in iTunes do you get to set the bitrate for WVA=>AAC conversion on import?

iTunes, Preferences, Advanced, Importing, AAC.

AAC is easily double the quality of MP3 at the same bitrate, so 256K will give nearly perfect stereo reproduction. You can go into Custom, Variable Bitrate and do even better.

<<<WVA=>AAC>>>

WVA? Windows....... Oh, WAV before your coffee.

Most compressors work much better when they start with perfect originals. If you present them with already compressed work (MP3), they have to uncompress, try to get rid of the already existing damage and then recompress. It never works out as well.

Koz & WC

Just to clarify what I'm doing, I am in the process of developing an experimental Audio Repsonse Timing device to measure psychological constructs like attention, impulsivity, reaction time, etc. Actually, my cousin has constructed an integrated unit to do what I need it to do. The way things are running right now, I have an audio signal in the left channel, which the person listens to, and a 1.4 millisecond sine wave in the right channel that signals the timer to start at the specified time. I save the audio signals onto an SD card that plugs into a built in mp3 player. I was having trouble getting a clean signal with the SD card reader I was using, and in an attempt to identify the problem I imported the audio into itunes to make sure the sound quality was good. That's when I noticed I didn't have stereo, and hence my plea for help from someone who knows much more than I do.

It's been a great learning experience, and I will try importing songs the way Koz suggested.

Thanks again for yur help.

You found that listening in iTunes gave you the cue tones on both sides? Producing a mono mix, like I think I said before, is hard to do by accident. Nor is iTunes in the habit of greatly modifying the shows presented to it. That's like the artistic performance kiss of death.

So Something Happened. If you pull your test track back into Audacity, is it still stereo, can you turn off the right speakers and not hear the beeps? Or better yet, is the beep track suddenly contaminated with music?

Oh, and I would absolutely avoid compressed formats until you straighten this out. That just muddies the waters.

"Do I have actual damage, or did I set the compressor wrong?"
