Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

major headache trying to get this to work

Post by mintomax » Mon Aug 31, 2009 1:13 pm

I cant believe how complicated this is to try and get this to work have downloaded 6 times lame library and every time I try to export as mp3 in audacity it wont recognize anything to open it as a mp3, I am being asked to locate lame library but NOTHING comes up that will open all I seem to get is pages of text (some in english and other just in jumbled up nonsense) but NO actual program to export as mp3. This should be such a basic thing to do and there is no way it should be this complicated to simply record my vinyl into mp3 and NO I dont beleive because of software patents you cant distribute this program with the actual deck and make this whole process simple for people the fact is you dont want to because you want people to resister and then you can try to sell them add ons and make them pay even more. If it is not possible to save music as mp3 then the product is not doing the 'task it is intended for' and is in serious breach of the trading standards act.

We are talking about Audacity, right? Did somebody try to sell you the program?

Audacity 1.2 comes free with many USB turntables, but that doesn't work any more if you have a modern Mac.

Click Apple > About This Mac and read what it says. Which Mac have you got? iMac, PowerBook, MacBook?

Audacity is totally free to download (there are a few people selling it - which can be legal providing they stay within the terms of the distribution license). But most users download it entirely for free. Your comment about trading standards sounds that Koz was right and someone has sold you Audacity for $/£.

Also there is no need to refister anywhere to download Audacity (not even here on the forum). Audacity can be downloaded from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/

You comment about Lame bundling is actually true. The Audacity team would love nothing more than to bundle in Lame with the distro - but Frauenhofer hods the patent and charges for it - so if it were bundled a charge would have to be incurred.

By the way there are better compressed formats out there that are newer and more efficient than MP3. For example if you are using iPod/iTunes (and since you are posting in the MAC section of the forum this likely) then it would be far better to use the Apple AAC compression format (you would need to export as WAV and then get iTunes to convert to AAC).

And please don't bad-mouth or imply base capitalist motives to the kind and very talented band of software developers who have donated much of their spare time to bring us all this wonderful audio sofware, entirely for free. It's what open source software is all about ...

<<< refister >>> ?
<<< resister >>> ?

What's so difficult about the word "register"? :D

Not forgetting "Ogg Vorbis" which unlike MP3, WMA or AAC is totally free and open source. http://www.vorbis.com/faq/

Support for Ogg files is included in Audacity as standard. Now if only Fraunhofer, Microsoft and Apple would follow the lead, life could be so much more simple.

Since you are one of the new people on Mac/Intel/Leopard, you have the wrong Audacity. As of the Leopard upgrade (OS-X 10.5), there are no stable Audacity 1.2 versions for us.

Audacity 1.3.7 -- Mac
http://audacity.googlecode.com/files/au ... -1.3.7.zip

That's the one I use for day to day production.

You should take the old Audacity off your machine and trash it. You also need to trash the Audacity Preferences file which is a little harder.

Go > Home > Library > Application Support > audacity (trash the whole folder).

If you have no such folder there, write back.

It uses the lame library program called libmp3lame.dylib dated Dec 23, 2008. The download is Lame_Library_v3.98.2_for_Audacity_on_OSX.dbg from here...

According to the Traktor website it supports all the following formats, not just MP3: MP3, WAV, AIFF, Audio-CD, FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, non-DRM WMA**, AAC

Size for size AAC will give you better audio than MP3 - and if you are using this professionally then you may want to use a lossless format: WAV which is uncompressed -- or FLAC which is compressed (about half the size of WAV typically) but still lossless.

??? Registered ? You registered on the forum, or registered the Audacity program? Audacity does not have any registration.
(I'm just asking because there are a number of unscrupulous people out there "selling" Audacity, even though it is free.)
