Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Distortion Level - Clipping: red indicators absent
New to Audacity and just trying to get the basics sorted out.
I have got to grips with the input level monitor, but no matter how high I turn the input level up the 'red' indicators which symbolise clipping will not appear. The very first time I played about with Audacity the indicator appeared but now nothing.
Any ideas?
Cheers,
B

It's good to know what the lights are trying to tell you. It's not just clipping. They indicate that the incoming sound signal exceeds Audacity's ability to form a perfect digital copy. They will not tell you if something is overloading or clipping before Audacity.
So we're way too close to the problem. Take three giant steps back and tell us what you're trying to do and how it's all connected.

Am transferring my Vinyl - to imac; DD Turntable through phono preamp and connected via audio in socket.
Previously I got the indicators when setting input level. But now I can turn the input level up to massive distortion but it does not trigger the red warning indicators.
Cheers,

What kind of iMac? Intel? Leopard -- OS-X 10.5? Apple > About This Mac.

You do have Show Clipping turned on still, right? (Accessed via View > Show Clipping).
Can't vouch for MAC, but I justed in my Windows XP PC and the clipping indicators still work fine in 1.3.8

You have the wrong Audacity. Audacity 1.2.x stopped working for us when we installed Leopard. It's fine under Tiger.
I know and like and use Audacity 1.3.7 which is not the current version, but 1.3.8 is experiencing teething pains.
http://audacity.googlecode.com/files/au ... -1.3.7.zip
So let's start there. You can also download the current 1.3.8 build from here...

The transition from 1.3.7 to 1.3.8 on the Mac unfortunately present problems with loading plugins. Severe problems.

You know you posted in the Audacity 1.2 forum, right?
<<<still cant get the markers to work!>>>
In Audacity they're call Labels and they're only handy in generic editing for finding edit points and then later for exporting multiple songs from one track.
I thought the complaint was the overload lights.
One of my favorite comics is "Candorville" when the two lead characters are holding different conversations and they suddenly catch on in the last panel. "What?" "What?"
Forget Audacity for a minute.
Apple > System Preferences > Hardware > Sound > Input.
Do you get the bouncing light when you produce the sound? Can you make that meter overload -- go all the way up?
