Ripping Vocal From .mkv video

Hi all,
I've followed the instructions for the 2-3 possible ways of muting vocals on an mp3 but to no avail. After splitting the audio tracks it looks like everything is split between the two (i.e. there isn't a vocal track and an instrumental track, but rather each L/R track plays to its respective speaker). Given this, is there any way to mute the vocals from either/both tracks or to at least silence them as much as possible? I read something about frequency adjustment, but wasn't able to determine how to do this in the program itself.
Thanks in advance. Also sorry if this is jumbled, as I don't know much about audio formatting in the first place.
