Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Splicing problems

Post by mcline » Thu Jul 09, 2009 5:37 pm

Ok I am having a problem splicing two audio files together.

I have used the tutorial on how to combine two files into one longer file. The problem I am running into is this, I combine the two files, the second audio file comes in. I press play to hear the audio it plays for a short while then the audio cuts out completely. I still see the blue lines that tell me the audio is still there, but no sound plays what so ever.

I am using audacity 1.2.6. I am on a PPC G5 macintosh and I am running 10.4.11 as my OS. I can't figure out why this is happening.

Any help in solving this issue would be appreciated.

I'm not sure exactly what the issue is, but if you read this you will probably figure it out: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... ement_Tips

That didn't help. It doesn't adress the issue I posted. I've searched the wiki for my problem and it's not there. This is something that hasn't been addressed yet on the wiki site and I can find no tutorial to fix it either.

Open the original two audio files in QuickTime Player (one at a time) and press Apple-I to get the INFO panel. What do they say? Audacity -- especially 1.2 -- doesn't deal well with two audio files with very different characteristics. There was one other posting on the forum about somebody who had speed changes between his two songs. Same problem. He could play them, but not combine them.

You could try your job in Audacity 1.3. If you upgrade to Mac/Intel/Leopard, you will need to go to Audacity 1.3 anyway.

Or you can convert the two songs to a common format.

Oop. Here it is...

Keep going. There's a lot of good stuff in that thread.

Format: 16-bit integer (Little Endian) Mono, 44.100 kHZ
Data Size: 1.25 MB
705.56 kbits/s

for the first audio file

Format: 16-bit integer (Little Endian) Mono, 48.000 kHZ
Data Size: 3.29 MB
767.98 kbits/s

for the second audio file.

I'm not sure how different the characteristics are. I'm very new to audio editing.

The top one is in Music CD format and the bottom one is in Television sound format. You could downconvert the second one to CD format using the instructions in that posting. 48000 -> 44100. Export a new WAV file and once they're both in the same format, they should fall right into each other on one timeline.

I'm not finding the instructions on how to downconvert. I've looked in the wiki, the link you posted to the other thread and I'm still not finding it. Could you tell me exactly what I need to do?

Put the 48000 song on Audacity. Change the little window in the lower left from 48000 to 44100. Export As WAV and call it something new. Don't damage the old file by calling them the same name.

That new file and your old 44100 file should cut and paste and edit into each other.

I have just started using audacity and successfully made a recording, but having saved it to WAV and going back to it, I find I have fourteen separate bits of the recording.
How do I combine all of these back into one recording?
In addition why does Audacity split a recording into bits and so create this problem.

By the way I followed the `Help' advice on "How to combine two files" and ended up with one SILENT file and it was not `muted', so what has happened to this?

When you use "Save", Audacity saves the entire project in its native format - an Audacity Project. This is not an audio file!

To make a normal audio file (such as a WAV file), you need to "Export".
