Step us through what you did. You visited this page...

...and about half-way down it volunteered to offer you Universal Binary Audacity 1.3.7.
You clicked on it and it gave you two confusing windows that looked like this...

OK the DMG Downloader box and the software package should arrive on your machine. Do not buy AVC Audio Editor by accident. Audacity is free.
Where did that fail for you? We could use a lot more information about your machine and versions. Apple > About This Mac. Which OS-X?
This process might fail if you do not have permissions to install fresh software on your Mac. Apple > System Preferences > System > Accounts. Are you an administrator?
