Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

low volume
I have a stanton T.92 usb, downloaded a new audacity. The gain on the program has no effect and the sound never moves from -12db. How does this work?

Re: low volume
In the case of a USB Sound Device, the analog service and the digitizer are outside the computer, so you do lose a lot of the control you're used to with a sound card or other internal service.
However, in the particular case, you can make up the difference. Edit > Select > All. Effect > Amplify > New Peak Amplitude -1 and do not allow clipping.
If you have a very noisy record, this isn't going to work well because the pops and noise will take over. In that case, you can go for the absolute level instead of the relative one.
You might want to stay at that lower level until you get done cleaning the recordings and then push the level up.

Re: low volume
You might also consider Audacity 1.3. Audacity 1.2 was designed during the Eisenhower administration and the tools are very simple and rudimentary. Audacity 1.3 has Click Removal and Clip Fix built in to help with record transfers. You can have both 1.2 and 1.3 as long as you don't try to launch both at once.
