Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Presonus Firebox not recognized by Audacity 1.2

Post by tdeuel » Thu Jun 18, 2009 9:04 pm

I believe it has to do with ASIO, but can anyone tell me if I can use my Presonus Firebox with Audacity 1.2?
Error file reads : "Error while opening sound device. Please check output device settings..."
I've set the I/O on Audacity to Presonus Firebox, and the mac control panel to Presonus Firebox.
No dice.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

You may also need a common sound setting. Try 44100, 16-bit, Stereo in the Audacity Preferences. Restart Audacity and see if that doesn't help.

If you're on Mac/Intel/Leopard, you have the additional complexity that Audacity 1.2 has some serious issues with us. Unstable 1.3 is much more stable for us than Stable 1.2. If you don't have that combination, you should be OK with either 1.2 or 1.3 -- assuming you got the right Audacity in the first place.

What's your system and which Audacity have you got?

You need to have the Windows drivers installed and the device must be connected and working before you open Audacity.
Check in "Edit menu > Preferences > Audio I/O" that you have the Presonus selected as the recording and playback device. You may need to restart Audacity after making changes to the Preferences.

If you still have trouble getting it to work, get it working with Windows Sound Recorder first, then set the recording and playback devices in Audacity to Microsoft Sound Mapper.

I am running Audacity Stable (1.2) on on older (pre-Intel) Mac powerbook.
I am using Mac OS X 10.4.11.
I have a Presonus Firebox.
Very frustrating, thanks very much for suggestions on how to get Audacity to recognize the Firebox unit.

Sorry to go off about Windows (I had just been writing to someone about a very similar issue on a Windows machine - I'm easily confused :? )

However, the approach to solving the problem on a Mac is similar - rather than the Windows Control Panel, I think it is "Go > Utilities > Audio Midi Setup" on Macs (no doubt Koz will correct me if I'm wrong).

No, but there may be a more straightfoward thing to try first.

Apple > System Preferences > Hardware > Sound > Input

See if your device shows up there. It may not say "FireBox", but it may say the name of the maker of the internal chipset -- or some wacky version number you've never seen before. I have a Logitech microphone that announces itself as 'AK5370.'

Select that for the input and try to send sound into the system right then. The panel's sound meter should flash if you do that.
