Can't access effects - all grey - even with audio selected

Hello. I'm new to Audacity, and need to change the pitch in a WAV file. Unfortunately, I can't access the effects menu. The entire menu remains grey, even after I've selected all audio. Help! Thanks.

Computer and OS? Are you Mac/Intel/Leopard?

If you have Audacity 1.2.6, you have the wrong Audacity. Intel Audacity is 1.2.5. However...

There are some very serious workarounds to force the much older Audacity 1.2 to work with our newer machines. It doesn't really wanna. Upgrade to Audacity 1.3.7 Universal. Remove 1.2.x and the config file...

Go > Home > Library > Application Support > audacity Folder [Trash the whole folder.]

You know you got rid of 1.2 when 1.3 asks you "English?"

If you need to use any of the better, more sophisticated and comprehensive production tools, we'll be sending you straight to 1.3.7 anyway.

I allso have the problem with grey effects and in both version 1.2 and 1.3. When I have loaded a file and click COTRL-A the effects all turn black but as soon as I start to play they turns grey.So???

So, Audacity doesn't do anything in real time. Select some audio, apply the filter, play the sound to hear how it worked. Some filters have a preview function so you don't have to apply the filter and UNDO the the whole show. Other filters, it's a good idea to select a small portion of the work and apply and UNDO that until you get what you need, then apply that effect to the whole work.

I too am new to Audacity, and am having the same problem of greyed out filters etc. I am using a Intel iMac 2.8Gb running Leopard 10.5.7, I am recording through a TERRATEC iVinyl pre-amp. Audacity recognises the pre-amp and I can record but cannot get the filters to work either on record or playback. I have tried trashing the application as suggested in an earlier post but to no avail, can some one please help?

I understand what you are saying but my problem remains. I opened a file in version 3.1.7 and at this stage I could see all effects in the edit menu in black. I then played for a short time and stopped. I moved the curser backwords and created an area I wanted to remove. but now the effects turned grey. I am a novice to Audacity and hope you can help.
