Using Mac 10.5.6
Audacity 1.3.7
when I want to record from the mic it gives me this error
I can use the internal mic
but the Blue Snowball external mic will not work
any suggestions?

You posted in the Audacity 1.2 forum so you had me going there for a second.
All the moons and stars have to line up for you to use an external digital microphone.
Apple > System Preferences > Hardware > Sound > Input
Select the new microphone and make sure the sound meter jumps when you talk into the mic. Close Preferences.
Open Audacity > Preferences > Audio I/O and make sure the sound settings are 44100, 16-bit (not 32) and Mono (not Stereo). Restart Audacity and look that the settings "stuck."
Click once inside the red recording meters (that wakes the meters up) and talk into the microphone.
