Can't record audio

I can't get Audacity to record anything. Then again I could just be a complete idiot, tried looking through and couldn't find anything.

I'm using Windows XP, on a HP laptop.

Someone on another forum mentioned a switch to switch between mic and headphones, couldn't find a switch or setting for this.

Sort of getting annoying :/.

And after reading some of the other problems, this program probably won't work considering I'm going to need to change it to a .mp3 or .wav and keep the sound, if anyone knows how to do that without losing audio, that'd actually be great X.x.

You're going to need to get a lot more compulsive than that. Which HP Laptop? What are you trying to plug in? What kind of microphone do you have? Are you trying to record or capture a live performance, or something you're getting from the internet?

Which Audacity exactly.

This will clear up when you tell us the model number of your computer.
