hi....newbie here.

I'm getting a "warbling" background after noise reduction.
It's a vocal track,,,Nancy Wilson, and after employing noise reduction, the background is "warbly". Vocals sound fine. I tried sliding the lever as far left to "less" as possible, but I still get the warbling.

In case I might be doing something wrong in the process, here's what I do.
1...hilite a "quiet" area
2...go to effect/noise removal/get noise profile. close and,,,
3...hilite the song
4...go to effect/noise removal/. slide lever left to one click away from the end(as suggested in a youtube vid). remove noise.

the background is very annoyingly warbly.

btw,,,is there a hiss/pop removal tool?

You should upgrade to Audacity 1.3.7 - the noise reduction effect is much improved and works as an effective hiss remover.

The "quiet area" that you highlight should only contain noise and no music at all.

Weird. I just downloaded audacity a few days ago and it's 1.2.6

Yes the quiet area is just noise not music.

It worked when i drew the lever all the way to left "less", but that's hardly the setting the youtube instructional suggested, and I'm rather perplexed at why the default is at the midway point....seems extreme to me given my experience so far.

Btw,,,,even at far left, the warbling is present in one particular song. I guess some sounds just don't work out well when you try to reduce the noise.

Let me be a little less ambiguous.

The noise reduction tool in Audacity 1.2 sucks. I have never been able to get it to do anything valuable -- the best I ever did was to make the show more or less bubbly. The tool almost always creates damage worse than the original noise.

Are we clear?

You need to take steps to find, download, and install Audacity 1.3. The noise reduction in Audacity 1.3 is a complete redesign and very, very much better and far more useful. Start with settings of 18dB Reduction (gentle), 500 Smoothing (generic setting), and no advance or delay. Take the profile sample on a "quiet" segment like you did in 1.2. This will probably give you significant noise reduction with little or no damage to the work. Increase the Reduction number until you get a good result or start getting show damage. Hope you can achieve a happy setting.

You can install both 1.3 and 1.2 on your machine successfully. Only use one at a time.
