Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

I did this by right clicking over the speaker icon in the task bar and opening recording devices. Then right clicking over one of the devices listed. Then checking 'show disabled devices' and 'show disconnected devices'. Stereo Mix appeared. It was disabled so I checked 'enable'. I opened Audacity. I started a track in itunes. I started 'record' in Audacity. It worked. Make sure your 'mic' volume is turned up at the top of the Audacity screen. Right click over the speaker icon in the task bar again. Select 'open volume mixer'. Make sure something isn't muted. I have Vista Home version.
