That's the difference between Stereo Line and Microphone connections. You can't cross them unless your laptop provides specific tools to do that.
You're right, Koz. I had not understood this difference before, and it didn't help that I have no memory of having to configure the distinction in my previous laptop. It must just have had a better sound card. It just seemed to work.
I've ordered a Behringer external sound card that should take care of the problem. Thanks for your help.

I don't know if this will help -- but I do have an inspirion E1705 (Dell)
If you double click on the Volume control button in your tool tray, then go to Options > "Properties", you should be able to find your audio device (mine is "Sigma Tel Audio"). Next try to select the "Adjust volume" with the "Recording" (radio button), and try to make it so when you hit OK, the "Recording" control panel shows up.
Now, click on the "Advanced" button in that Microphone Panel, and see if yours has a "Microphone Boost" checkbox.
If it does, uncheck it, then click OK.
i have found that if the this option is checked, it makes the Mic super sensitive on the laptop.
