Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

The settings for the least fuss are the ones for a Music CD.

44100, 16-bit, Stereo

The best export format is Microsoft WAV.

The other default settings are either good to go for almost everything, or don't matter unless you're doing something wacky.

I personally would transition over to Audacity 1.3 as fast as I could go. You can put both on your machine as long as you only run one at a time. In 1.3, you can tune the Export step on the fly instead of having to do it in the Preference panels and the program isn't as unstable as the label would suggest.

Microsoft WAV format is accepted by Windows and everybody else across all three computing platforms. It doesn't damage the performance like MP3.
