Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

I/O device error

Post by sswright » Sat Apr 18, 2009 8:33 pm

I've used Audacity for years now, and have never had this problem...
Today, I was recording a record using Audacity 1.2 and about 8 minutes into the recording a window popped up reading this:

Write error on file 'C:DOCUME~1USERLOCALS~1Tempaudacity_1_2_tempb00308.au' (error 1117: the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.)

I have Windows XP and plenty of hard drive space (available recording time: 25 hours), I even tried reinstalling Audacity and I still get the same problem but I have no idea why this message keeps popping up.
Please help

<<<I even tried reinstalling Audacity >>>

Audacity 1.2 on a Windows machine is a problem. 1.2 burns its preferences into the Dreaded Windows Registry instead of a stand-alone preferences file. Did the new Audacity ask you "English?" when you opened it the first time? If it didn't, then you will keep getting stuck with the possibly damaged Preferences service from the old Audacity.

I/O errors can be caused not by drive space, but by quality. When was the last time you defragged and error checked? Audacity will not work into a badly fragmented hard drive, and if you've never done it, your drive will be a mass of little snippets and fragments of files.

I/O errors can also be caused by a dirty connector on that USB sound device you forgot to tell us about.
