Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Recording LP in stereo becoms mono

Post by rannug » Fri Apr 17, 2009 5:11 pm

I have 3 computeres. IBM Aptiva (8 years) with Windows XP, Packard Bell Laptop (2 years old) with Vista Home Premium and HP pavilon (2 years old) with Vista Home Premium. Audacity 1.2.6 is installed on all 3 computers. Only on the XP-version recording from LP is correct in stereo. On Vista only one chanel is recorded in both channels. All drivers are up to date and all settings is check. I have tried the new 1.3.7 Beta version but the problem is the same. A recorded LP in stereo from XP copied into Vista, shows the correct stereo sound on both channels.

With V 1.3.7, it seems to be working for me now. You need to make sure the Software Playthrough is unchecked in the preferences.
It could be my imagination :)

Maybe.

How are you connected to the computers? Deskside machines tend to have Line-In on their sound card -- actually they have everything. Laptops tend to have only Mic-In. Aside from the distortion and sound level issues, the microphone connection is mono.

Oh, yes. No end of problems with those. Make sure all the connections are secure. unplug and plug everything a couple of times and restart the computer. Is this one of the ones where the headshell comes off? Pull it off and put it back on a couple of times.

These turntables were designed to be thrown away, but sometimes you have to throw them away a little too soon. Since Audacity comes with many of them (the price is right), we get all the complaints here on the forum.

The Desperation Method is to use the analog connections plugged into the Line-In on your Deskside PC or any Mac. Windows laptops tend not to have a Line-In, so there is no alternate method for those.

Now I have tryed all posible settings but the recording is stil in mono and only one channel is recorded. Uninstall and reinstall Audacity didn't help. I drop Audacity as then program for recording my old LP-redords on a pc with VISTA. Instead I record LP on my old XP-computer and then I download to the Vista-pc. Then I can edit the record in stereo and convert to MP3 or WAV files. Not a god idea but it works

Audacity is a very good program but unfortunately, I can't use it on my Vista-pc.

Hello all Audacity fans.
To day I have a full function Audacity on my VISTA-pc. I have gone through alle posible settings and then I changed the settings for the microphone. It was not set to stereo and after changing - and som other simple settings - HURRA all is no working perfect. The only problem I have now is, this: I split the whole LP into single tracks an export all to MP3. Then I burn a cd from library with the the MP3 filles. Now i want to listen to the music on my cd-player but the only "sound" is a message - NO DISK. What is wrong? Is it the type of cd - CD+R/RW or CD-R/RW?

To make a proper CD you need to export as WAV files (44.1kHz 16-bit PCM stereo - the Red Book standard for CDs). You need to author the CD with some CD burning software e.g. Nero, Roxio, etc.) and you need to create a music CD not a data D.

See this Wiki article: http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... o_burn_CDs and http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... uter_or_CD

Help! Just received usb turntable with Audacity software 1.2.6, and cannot record in stereo. Yes, the settings in Audio I/O is for two channels stereo. Have uninstalled and reinstalled a couple of times. My computer is laptop with XP. Also, the Mixer Toolbar dropdown input selector does not function. Any ideas?
