Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Record No longer Working Properly

Post by pulsatk » Sat Apr 11, 2009 10:22 pm

I have been recording without an issue and suddenly the recording function is no longer working properly. I have uninstalled and reinstalled software and issue is still not resolved. I'm unclear as to whether I accidentally changed a setting on the main display for Audacity. When I select a range to record, it simply records as a straight blue line. There is no playback. The monitoring device during the recording function no longer moves. I have tried several steps based on FAQ's and other trouble shooting advice, but cannot enable the recording function.
Please help.

<<<suddenly the recording function is no longer working properly.>>>

And this happened right after you filled up your hard drive? You didn't say which type of computer you have, but they all go nuts when the last of the spare drive room gets used up.

Which type of computer do you have?

<<<I have uninstalled and reinstalled software>>>

Which in the case of Audacity doesn't do anything. We need to know the Audacity Version and computer type.

I have a new PC, so I'm pretty sure space is not an issue at this point. When I say it was working normally, I had just downloaded the software, used it to record (1) song, fine, started trying to figure out why it was defaulting to MONO vs. STEREO on record and began changing settings. Got that issue fixed and tried to record and that's when it stopped recording, on my 2nd try. It's a straight blue line during record.
I have a Dell, 298 GB used space is 24.8 GB. It's an AMDAthlon(tm) 64 x 2 Dual, Core Processor 4000+, 2.11 Ghz. I'm running Windows XP professional SP3. Is there anything else that you need?
Thanks

Audacity defaults to Mono right out of the box, so nobody's amazed about that. If your intention is to burn Music CDs later you might want to change one or two other preferences. 44100, 16-bit, Stereo. I personally like to turn off Auto Scrolling. I got used to the Zoom tools and the timeline movement makes me crazy.

Control-F Zoom Full
Control-E Zoom into the sElection (after you select something)
Control-3 Zoom out a little bit.

Anyway, which Audacity?

You got really close to telling us what you're recording. USB Turntable? Live Microphone?

I downloaded version 1.2.6.

I'm simply importing an mp3 song from my music folder and recording portions of the song to download to my cell as a ringtone. I have tried other mp3 imports and it's not the music.

<<<an mp3 song from my music folder >>>

How did it get to your music folder?

<<<I have tried other mp3 imports>>>

From.....? Rich detail is good when we're trying to diagnose the problem.

Try downloading piano2-CoolEdit.mp3 from here ...

And see if that does the same thing. It's my six second long piano solo. One of my greatest works.
