Lost all sound in XP

I have a new Eee 1000he that I have had for 5 days. Everything has been working perfectly until yesterday. I installed audacity and then tried recording sound as it was playing in Firefox. As I was fiddling with settings trying to make it record right I lost all sound from Firefox and audacity. I was able to play a file in audacity and then Firefox sound started working again. Fast forward to today, none of my sound works. Not Firefox, IE, winamp, not anything. So, thinking that it was maybe a hardware problem I booted linux and sound is working just as it always has been. I have been through the windows troubleshooter without any success. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure this out. Oh, and be gentle, I have been away from windows for long enough to forget how to make it work :D

Go into the control panel and find the "Sounds and Audio Devices" settings. Check what is set for the recording and playback devices. While you are there, try previewing a sound from the Windows sounds (alerts) options to check that it is working. If no sound from Windows system sounds, open up the Windows Mixer (double click on the loudspeaker icon near the desktop clock) and check that you have not got it muted.

No problem - it's dead easy to miss until you know what you are looking for. Glad you've got it working.
