I cannot find the wave out mix/stereo mix in the sounds setting on Windows Vista. I right clicked to enable "show disabled devices" and nothing shows up but the 3 recording devices I originally already had. I checked to see what sound driver I had by going through Device Manager and I believe I have the general driver provider: Microsoft, high definition audio device, with the driver version of 6.0.6000.16386. I did the update driver and it said I already had the latest version of the driver. Can someone tell me how to either get a different updated sound driver so that I can enable wave out mix or just any other way I can get the wave out mix without having to go through installing a new driver. Thanks!

There are several new laptops on record that lock out your ability to record the computer's sound feed; "Mix-Out."

I think the only way out of that restriction is Total Recorder.

There may be a way to plug a jumper cable between the laptop Line-Out and the Line-In. Most laptops, however, don't have Line-In and and (usually) pink Mic-In doesn't work.

If you have a desktop computer with Line-in and Line-out connectors, then you can use a lead to connect the line out to the line-in, thus routing the sounds playing on your computer back into the line-in socket through which they can be recorded.

This does not usually work on lap-top computers other than Macs.

But you can workaround this by buying an external USB soundcard (like the Behringer UCA202 or the Edirol UA-1EX and looping back the outputs to the inputs on that device.

Ironically, my newer laptop supports recording of streamed audio direct without this workaround - whereas my older desktop will only do it with the external soundcard - I personally use the Edirol.
