Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Difficulty with Recovered Files

Post by rocketfuel » Sat Apr 04, 2009 3:52 pm

Hello-

Last night I was interviewing a guest for my podcast and when it was over, Audacity crashed on me. After doing research online, I downloaded the Audacity Recovery tool, found where the temporary files were and recovered the audio to this roughly 25 minute interview. I was so relieved!

However, when I now listen to it more in-depth this morning, I notice that 10-15 second chunks of it are missing and the interview just skips forward. I have saved all of those temp files to another source for later use and wanted to know if there was a way to recover the full interview with no skips. Otherwise, what I was able to recover is all for naught. Is there a way you can help me?

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

It may be for naught.

The latest generation of recovery tools do a really good job of reconstructing the shards and fragments of your crashed capture into a single show. It used to be you could do a better job using exotic, manual tools, but not any more.

When Audacity crashes, the machine becomes temporarily unstable and it may create damage anywhere in the show, not just at the end.

You can get machine insanity like this when your hard drive is filling up. Do you have at least 10% of your drive free?

Do you regularly error check and defragment your hard drive? All Windows machines eventually clog up with fragmentation and Audacity will not work into a badly fragmented hard drive.

Is your Windows patched and do you have up to date virus protection? Some of the newer virus programs can interfere with Audacity or any real time program. Take your machine off the internet, turn off the virus software and then capture your show.

Hey Koz-

Thanks for the reply. My CPU is pretty new and has plenty of memory and is not fragmented. When I tried to run the recovery again, it turns out that the temp files were not saved in the recovery, but it appears that they all still exist in the _data file for the project that I created when I imported the recovered WAV files into an Audacity project. I think I am grasping at straws here, but is there a way to run a recovery from that _data file? I tried using the tool, but it didn't work.
