no audio on playback, but exported files work fine

when i record/import within audacity, there is no audio on playback. if i export the file, it sounds fine. under settings, i have tried both options for speakers. the volume is turned up on the control panel within audacity. i have windows vista. i never had these problems in xp.

Try using Audacity 1.3.7 - it is reported to work better in Vista than the old 1.2 version.
