Transferring cassettes to PC in stereo

Post by Scraff » Thu Apr 02, 2009 7:27 pm

I transferred an old studio recorded cassette to my PC using audacity, but it's only playing back in one speaker. I'm using a stereo boombox and a 3.5mm male-male jack that have two plastic rings on each side. Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

Dig down into the Audacity Preferences and make sure you're capturing in stereo. It's also good to capture 44100, 16 bit, Stereo while you're at it. That sound standard drops into CD burners and MP3 compressors really well.

Edit > Preferences > Quality and Audio I/O.

Are you on a Windows Laptop? Most of them have Microphone-In and not Line-In. Line-In is stereo, Mic-In is mono.

And way down at the bottom of the list...is your cable OK? Firmly pushed into both machines? We cured one person by telling them to pull out each end and push back firmly and and turn half-way.

It was. Really. But I pulled it out of the PC jack and put it back in...and now it works! Thank you.
