problems with simple cutting and pasting

Hey all,

According to the manual: after you have made a cut, the paste will 'insert at the position of the selection or cursor of the project'.
But at the moment, regardless of where I click the cursor before pasting, the file always inserts at the same place when I paste. But in the time bar at
the top, the area where the file should be turns to a darker tone after pasting, despite the fact that the actual is not within that marker. Is that an program error, or am I doing something highly retarded? I'm trying to construct a simple demo of certain sections from songs, and using two stereo audio tracks want to fade out the end of track 1/song 1 into the fade in of track 2/song 2, repeating the process between both tracks moving through different songs.

Would appreciate any suggestions!

Here's a magic problem...

When you click inside the blue waveforms, does the cursor "stick" and does Audacity start playing from that point when you press the spacebar?

Sometimes you can cure magic problems like this by restarting the computer. Does the problem change at all when you do that?

Does Audacity complain at you when you try to save your Project?

I've tried restarting and still does the same thing. I've tried a friends copy of audacity beta version and it doesn't have this problem.
Maybe it's something to do with editing settings or something? Or maybe I should just reinstall it and hope?

Rubbish

Does.
That.
Work?

Reinstalling a damaged Audacity 1.2 on a Windows machine may not do you any good at all. This is the worst Audacity version to fix because the developers believed Microsoft and put the preferences in the Dreaded Windows Registry. That was the last time they made that mistake.

You might try to install Audacity 1.3 on your machine, too. You can have both as long as you only use one at a time.

yes the cursor does indeed 'stick' and play from there.

Anyhow, I've installed the newer beta version and it works fine, so there we go.

thanks for your advice.
