Recording and playback speed do not match

Used Audacity for quite a while...recently got new Dell computer with Windows XP Professional Service Pak 3. Recorded 30 one minute messages I exported to MP3. Now when I go back to record this month I get an error message that says error while opening device. Please check input device setting and project rate. I have checked and changed project rates but does not seem to help. It will occasionally let me record but records in one speed and playsback in another no matter how I adjust the sample rates. Have version 1.2.6

First thing to try is upgrading to Audacity 1.3.7
