horrible feedback kinda sound

I've tried to record my vinyl to pc but when I hit the record button I get this feedback sound all the time. I've looked through related topics and done everything suggested like "playthrough disabled", speakers off, turned everything off I don't need etc. Could somebody help please.

Can you post ten or twenty seconds of it somewhere that we can hear it? If you've been through the usual suspects then there may be something else wrong.

You're recording the record silent, right? The room is completely silent while you're recording the track? Does the record sound OK before you record?

Change your input selection from "What-U-hear" to "Line-In". THis is done on the main screen - the drop down box is to the right of the sound and mic sliders. Will fix it right up!

Hi chcobb....I am unable to access the drop down box...seems to be disabled. How can I enable it??

You can select your recording source in Audacity's Edit -> Preferences -> Audio I/O menu. The drop down menu on Audacity's main screen is disabled by quite a few drivers. You need to select your Turntable (not Line In). I don't know what it will be called exactly.

Also make sure you have 'Software Playthrough' turned off in Audacity.

Hi all....still not working. Here are my setup details: Audio I/O...Playback device "realtek ac97 audio" (soundcard), Recording: "USB Audio Codec "(Turntable), channels: 2(stereo).....I have software playthrough unchecked. The noise I am getting is a continuous high pitched tone. I am using windows XP.
