I have a 56K data/fax/voice modem on COM1 which acts as my POTS telephone answering machine (voicemail). The software is called SuperVoice. It records unanswered calls, but it doesn't record answered calls. I am trying to use Audacity 1.2.6 (Win XP) to record both sides of the normal telephone conversation.

When I select the input device by Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O > Recording Device > I see (Modem #1 Line Record) and (Modem #1 Handset Record) as options, amongst others. But selecting either of these and starting to record I get : "Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sample rate".

When I try and do the same thing using Windows Sound Recorder on either of those devices I get the error : "Another application is already recording that device. Close that application first."

I believe that the latter error message is correct - it would be the SuperVoice app ready to record activity.

So the Audacity error message is (politely) not as helpful as it could be.

The modem has 2 x 3.5mm sockets for Mic. and Speaker on the front. I was thinking I could patch them into Line In (stereo) and record that, but it fails the same way.

Surely this is not so hard ! What should I do?
Is there a method of recording all traffic on COM1 ( same stuff but addressed by different handles ) ?

Yes, it is. And don't call me Shirley (Leslie Neilsen, "Airplane" 1980.)

This is the same problem that Vonage and Skype have. In order to make this stuff work with any reliability at all, they have to grab the machine sound services with a vice and not let go. Hence the Windows complaint that somebody else got their first. Audacity complains like that whenever it can't figure out how to talk to the computer. It's the same error in Mac, Windows, and Linux.

One of the two VOIP programs has their own recording software that's integrated into the telephone service, the other doesn't. The full version of Pamela (Google) will record both sides of the conversation, but I don't know if it's applicable to what you're doing.

I don't have VOIP, but I do have Total Recorder on my PC which will record anything the machine is doing. Again, I have no idea if it would work with your particular setup.

The Mic is probably an input, not an output. The speaker may just give you the receive audio. What happens if you plug a headphone in the Speaker out?
