<<<urgent!!!>>>

Urgent in this case is 24-hours because that's as long as it takes the question to ripple around the Earth.

If you are capturing a live musical performance in Audacity and then playing it back, then any pitch or sound changes can be laid at the feet of a ratty sound card. Audacity is pretty simple and the surrounding computer has to be perfectly working for performance captures to work both ways.

Had you said that your edits or clips play back way too fast, then I would have said you were trying to edit a music file type that Audacity didn't know how to manage. It messes up compression and playback speeds when that happens.

Slightly off is more like problems with a $4 sound card.

As koz says, the most likely cause is a ratty sound card that is playing back audio at a slightly different speed to what it is recording at. You may find that it behaves better (or worse) if you change the default sample frequency (Edit menu > Preferences >Audio I/O). Try both 44100 Hz and 48000Hz and see if one is better than the other.
