drum machine

Post by melvin » Sat Oct 06, 2007 1:52 pm

I am trying to record thru a line 6 gearbox and the hydrogen drum machine and although the guitar sounds record ok the drum machine noises are not being recorded by audacity, does anyone know why this is and how can I resolve the issue? thanx

Gearbox is a combination software and hardware package right? So you have two packages trying really hard to dominate the sound channels.

Without taking the packages apart driver by driver, I would probably try putting a jumper "Y" cable into the machine. Feed the Line Out both to your sound system and to the Line In. Then tell Audacity to record the Line In instead of trying to capture the performance in transit. If that works, that will get the performance out the door while you find a more elegant solution that doesn't need the cables.

Then come back and tell us how you did it.

The problem is that you can't record multi-track projects with a real-time software DSP like GearBox. At least, not with Audacity. You will always be limited to recording one track with nothing playing in the background unless you have some seriously awesome sound card driver software. Koz's solution will also cause the same problem.

The problem is due to the fact that Audacity needs to record straight from your drivers. You can't set a piece of software as an input in Audacity (unless you use GNU/Linux, in which case Jack can probably do that).

As for why the drum machine isn't recording, I have no idea. What input do you have Audacity set to record from?

Thanks for the reply guys, I'm not too sure about the 'Y' connection answer, the gearbox software is used in conjunction with a usb interface while the drum machine is just a program already installed in the computer, does this make any difference? While Audacity will record any amount of overdubs from the guitar no problem with gearbox, the drums won't come thru, even a pattern sampled thru the gearbox device will not record, even when that is the selected input for audacity to record from...! Any ideas ? :(

Wait, you can record overdubs through Gearbox while listening to the previous tracks?

*is surprised*

I can't really help with the drum machine, I'm shocked that you can even get Gearbox working. This is the first I'm hearing about that.

Yeah its no problem laying down a guitar track then playing and recording over it, the line6 gearbox works a treat, if I could only get some backing beats I'd be rocking in style..!

What recording source do you have listed in Audacity's Edit -> Preferences -> Audio I/O menu when you are recording using Gearbox?

THis is a rather old thread but I have the same question.

I can record my bass fine through gearbox into audacity. But how would I be able to record a drumbeat playing on the computer in another program (Hydrogen)?

Hydrogen? Are you using Linux? If so you are on the wrong board.
On Linux it can be done using JACK, so long as you can get it to run for long enough without crashing. There's several fairly recent posts on the Audacity 1.3.x Gnu/Linux board about this. (and yes it's possible - you can even route the sound through effects in Jack Rack before recording into Audacity, but it is tricky to get it working without crashing).

thanks for the fast response.

No, I'm using windows, I take it audacity can't record from Hydrogen? Wouldn't it just be recording the drum beat that's coming thru the sound card?
