Not recording

I'm having problems with Audacity.

Last year, a record company in Europe emailed me some files, I recorded my parts using Audacity, mixed them and emailed them back. I plugged into a solid state guitar amp (so I could hear myself) and went from the line out into the computer. It worked like a champ, my parts were added to the CD's, and I got paid.

Today I plugged in and tried to do it exactly the same way, and encountered problems.

First, I had a choice of recording or hearing my bass through the speakers, but not both.

I installed all the available Windows upgrades and restarted the computer, and I could hear my bass through the speakers, but I could not make it record anything.

Any ideas what I may be doing wrong?

Near the clock on your desktop you should find a loudspeaker icon. Double click on it. This will open either the "Windows Mixer", or a custom sound card control panel. Set which recording and playback inputs/outputs you are using and set the levels. Make sure that the input that you are recording from is selected as the recording input, and is not muted in the playback section.

Thanks for your reply.

I did all that, and it still didn't work. Maybe it's our cheap computer...

Here's a video of what happened when I tried to record today with audacity. I'm really hoping the video will help someone tell me what I'm doing wrong. The first time I tried to record it recorded, but it wasn't loud enough, and the second time it didn't record any sound. Also, at the end of the video you can see that even if I try to turn up the microphone, the volume goes back down by itself.

Thank you.

That's the clue we were waiting for.

Thank you Steve, I'll be trying again tomorrow. After reading that thread, I'm very hopeful :)
