Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Bumped (disconnected) sound card during recording; cant save

Post by DavidKM » Sun Mar 08, 2009 7:03 pm

Please help! I was recording a set for a radio show and accidentally bumped my Korg Zero8's firewire cable, disconnecting the soundcard. The recording immediately stopped, which is fine, but Audacity is now showing me the full waveform, which looks fine, but not allowing any operations like save or even cut and paste. I am not sure where my temp directory is but I find no recent large Audacity files on the hard drive when I do a Search for all files modified today. I cannot even check preferences in Audacity's current state.
The undo history reads this way.

recorded audio 3 mb [first test for levels]
removed track 'audio track.' 0 mb [presumably the undo level for when I hit record a second time]
recorded audio 46 mb [a second 2-minute test for levels]
removed track 'audio track.' 1212 mb [this confuses me. this is the hour-long recording i want to save, but the level is called "removed track 'audio track'"]

I desperately need to get this fixed: that is, I need to find a way to save or feel secure in closing and reopening Audacity and recovering the project.

I am using Audacity 1.2.6

Thanks!!!!

I should also mention that the sound card is working again so far as other applications are concerned. But Audacity still has most options, including save, greyed out.

Can you play the show? You didn't actually say that.

Does it export? If you can export, that will give you a stand-alone WAV audio file that you can edit later.

If all else fails, do you know anybody with a nice Mac? Plug the headphone out of your PC into the Line-In of the Mac and re-record the show on the Mac. This usually doesn't work between two PC Laptops, but might work between your PC and a deskside PC. Best, highest quality is between your machine and a Mac.

If you do close down the machine, this is how to do the crash recovery.

For future reference I would recommend using the beta version - the crash recovery is much improved in 1.3.

1.3 is now fairly stable - I no longer use 1.2 at all. I use 1.3.7 - some posters on this forum rcommend sticking at 1.3.6 as that appears to be slighly more stable than 1.3.7.
